People just aren't going out in the ways they did pre-COVID— or when they do, they're saving up for a big-ticket blowout that feels like "a treat” with festivals such as Primavera Sound, Rock En Seine, Lowlands, Pinkpop, or Tomorrowland being the most likely destination for that, or indoor shows like the Warehouse Project or Abba at the O2 Arena. This has resulted in smaller crowds for local nights where a relatively unknown resident DJ might be developing their career, so does that mean that talent isn’t being nurtured anymore? And will the younger generation get used to the scale, cleanliness and spectacle of big events and never get to appreciate the pleasures of neighbourhood and grassroots clubs? But most importantly, how can those clubs and smaller venues re-find their place in the music business eco-system, especially when it comes to being a platform for emerging artists and mid-sized acts?
