The EDM Boom: Lessons From the 2010s
Speakers: Ferry Corsten (DJ/producer), Lorne Padman (President of Dim Mak Records), Lars Schlichting (Director of Product Planning, Artist Relations at Pioneer DJ Americas)
Moderator: Alexei Barrionuevo (journalist, director/co-producer of “Waiting For The Drop,” a documentary)
In the early 2010s, electronic dance music (EDM) blew up in the U.S., becoming super popular with a more mainstream sound. Big room house music was everywhere, and DJs like Avicii, Hardwell, David Guetta, and Swedish House Mafia were making huge waves. This led to skyrocketing DJ fees and shook up club scenes in places like Las Vegas and Ibiza. At the same time, massive festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival and Ultra Music Festival started popping up all over the world, turning dance music into a multi-billion-dollar industry.
One company even saw the money-making potential and tried to create a huge business by buying up EDM-related assets and going public on the stock market in 2013. Social media’s rise also played a big role, pushing DJs to partner with brands to boost their careers and, in some cases, turn themselves into brands. All events that changed the way electronic music got experienced.
Together with Alexei Barrionuevo, director of Waiting For The Drop - a film about the 2010s EDM boom and its impact, that will be screened on Friday at Melkweg - this panel will look at how the EDM boom affected the dance music culture that was established in Europe and changed the business side, and the tension it caused with the music during that time. Joining Alexei, are DJ and producer Ferry Corsten, Lorne Padman - president of Dim Mak Records and AlphaTheta/Pioneer DJ’s Sr. Director of Artist Relations Lars Schlichting.
