The 20-year Trend Cycle of Gabber
Speakers: Paul Elstak (Artist), Tantu Beats (Artist), MCR-T (Artist), Maarten Vorwerk (Artist)
Moderator: Sietse van Daalen (Da Mouth of Madness)
There was a time when ravers could only find distorted kicks and harsh synths in off-site silos or underground clubs. That changed when 'Gabber' was introduced to a larger audience. It evolved, fusing with genres like Happy Hardcore or becoming defined as Early Rave - entering popular culture in the '90s with hits like 'Rainbow in the Sky' by Paul Elstak and later in the mid-2000s through Jumpstyle, led by Maarten Vorwerk (Jeckyll & Hyde) with the number one hit 'Freefall.'
Now, about 20 years later, Gabber is back in the spotlight. Many pop artists are incorporating heavy basses and sharp kicks into live edits of their tracks, while club spaces introduce the sound to new audiences. Examples include MCR-T, who infuses his tracks with familiar Gabber sounds, and producer Tantu Beats, who worked with Dutch artist Joost on the Eurovision 2024 entry, 'Europapa,' which paid homage to Gabber.
The four producers will join the ADE Lab to discuss Gabber’s trend cycle, its resurgence, and why it's being embraced by a wider audience. How have they incorporated the style while staying authentic, and what drove this renewed interest? Let’s dig in.
