Privacy and Night Culture
Many clubs enforce a no-photo policy, yet we notice that outside of the club, almost everything is being recorded, both with and without permission. How can clubs and archival institutions handle heritage and pass it on to the next generation when there are no, incomplete, or one-sided representations?
On ADE Wednesday, Stadsarchief Amsterdam is hosting a session on privacy and night culture, specifically geared toward professionals in the event industry. The session starts by framing the discussion with case studies on what privacy, copyright and portrait rights are, and taking a deep dive into alternative archiving techniques. The panel will be guided by Nathan Kofi and Leendert Sonnevelt from De School (Amsterdam), and Manique Hendricks, a contemporary art curator. During the session, we'll open the floor to new ideas and methods of archiving and highlight the different aspects of visual archiving.
Panelist:
- Bjorn Schipper - the nightlife lawyer, Plus One Legal. Bjorn wrote his thesis on the copyright protection of turntable art and argued on behalf of dance promoters before the Supreme Court of the Netherlands in a landmark case on the fair remuneration for playing commercial phonograms by DJs at dance events.
- Nathan Kofi, Creative Head at De School, music professional, cultural analyst (Drs.), creative concept developer & strategist, with a big love for subcultural music & identities.
- Leendert Sonnevelt, curator, stylist and writer whose globally platformed work crisscrossed the off-roads of fashion, music and (queer/club) culture.
- Manique Hendricks, Dutch-Peranakan Chinese art historian. She works as a contemporary art curator at the Frans Hals Museum and was a guest curator of the exhibition 'To Dance is To be Free: Club Culture in Amsterdam from 1980 until now' at the Amsterdam City Archives.

Not to worry! Make sure to contact the event (or their ticketing provider) you are visiting as soon as possible with as many details about your order; name, email address, amount of tickets, etc. Once they've recovered your order, the tickets can be resent to your email.

Most festival events have an age limit of 18+ (and sometimes even 21+ or 23+). These are Dutch governmental rules which state that below the age of 18 you are not allowed to enter a club.
Please double-check the promoter's or venue's website to be sure you can access the event!
Yes, the Pro Pass grants you access to all ADE official festival events. Even if a festival event is sold out, you can still access the event with your ADE Pro Pass wristband. During ADE there are over 500 festival events and hundreds more cultural and conference events you can enter with the wristband. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a limited capacity that each venue can take into account for ADE Pro wristband holders. This means that, for some of the more crowded events, you have to arrive early to ensure attendance. Once capacity is reached, ADE Pro holders will be let into the event on a one in-one-out basis.
We dance together, so please be mindful of yourself and each other. We expect an open attitude from our visitors towards other guests, regardless of their origin, gender, sexual orientation, religion and age. If you see or experience any unwanted attention, harassment or behavior of any kind that makes you uncomfortable, please speak out and notify staff.
