Creating Magic: Rituals and Ceremonies at Events and Festivals

Speakers: Pip Rush Jansen (Arcadia Spectacular), Remi Olajoyegbe (Medicine Festival), Artur Mendes (Boom Festival)

Moderator: Leonore van den Ende

In this panel, we’ll look at how festivals can lay the groundwork for a renewed respect for nature and cultivate a culture of peace.

About this program

How can festivals use their tremendous potential to reimagine the story of our time? Ever since humans started walking planet Earth, we’ve gathered our tribes. The purpose used to be intimately connected to our natural environment. Annual rituals were held around the cycle of the seasons, sacred sites, the return of the rains, and the growth of our crops. Over time, this deep connection with nature got lost and we forgot the Earthly purpose of our gatherings. Meanwhile, we still have a deep desire to connect through meaningful experiences.

How can festivals spark the positive changes we need to face today’s challenges? Can festivals be perceived as rituals, or intentionally ritualized, to drive transformation? Together with Pip Rush Jansen (Arcadia Spectacular, UK), Remi Olajoyegbe (Medicine Festival, UK) Artur Mendes (Boom Festival, PT), and Leonore van den Ende (Vrije University Amsterdam, NL), we’ll uncover the stories, symbols, and ancient wisdom shared within festival communities.
