DJ Babatr: The Story of Raptor House
Speakers: DJ Babatr (DJ, Producer), Emmerson Hernández (DJ, Producer)
Moderator: Martha De Barros (DJ, Producer)
Over two decades since pioneering the Raptor House genre, Venezuelan DJ Babatr is finally receiving the recognition he deserves for his pivotal role in creating a musical movement that captured the energy and spirit of the streets of Caracas. As the creator and undisputed representative of this unique sound, DJ Babatr has been instrumental in redefining electronic music by infusing it with the pulse, rhythm, and reality of the Venezuelan barrios.
In this conversation, we'll dive deep into the origins of Raptor House, exploring its evolution from the lively mid-day raves at minitecas referred to as matinées, where a tropical Latin reinterpretation of techno gave voice to neighborhoods like Catia, Las Lomas, La Cota, and Petare. We'll trace its rise to becoming a global underground phenomenon that speaks to the experience of marginalized communities.
DJ Babatr will share his personal journey from his early days as a teenager in the Venezuelan barrio to becoming a driving force behind a genre that captured the energy of economically vulnerable areas, predominantly inhabited by Black and darker-skinned Venezuelans. Amid neighborhood feuds and the rising political tensions in Venezuela, Raptor House emerged as a powerful form of cultural expression, blending Caribbean flair with relentless musical experimentation.
From his 90s techno inspirations, to the alternative name "Changa Tuki" and the dance style that offered a release for Venezuelan youth—while also facing misunderstood and negative connotations. Discover how DJ Babatr continues to bring the world a taste of Raptor House and the cultural significance behind this Latin Caribbean sound.
