Dilla 50 - The Influence and Legacy of Detroit’s Beat Making Legend

Speakers: Maureen Yancey, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Carl Craig

Moderator: Dennis de Groot

Detroit’s legendary producer J Dilla revolutionized the art of electronic beat making. He has heavily impacted the rhythm and heartbeat of a wide range of modern music. From hip-hop to house, and from live shows to the dance floor, his inventions and techniques influenced numerous artists, musicians, DJ’s and producers, and his electronic approach heavily impacted the evolution of live drumming. Dilla is a generational musical pioneer.

At ADE we celebrate his mind-blowing influence and legacy in the year he would have been 50 years old with a unique program. We will officially open ADE 2024 with a performance of Suite for Ma Dukes by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & Metropole Orchestra. And we kick off the ADE Pro-conference with a special ‘Dilla 50’-talk, curated by ADE Beats.

Detroit music pioneer Carl Craig, acclaimed composer and conductor Atwood-Ferguson and very special guest Maureen ‘Ma Dukes’ Yancey - Dilla’s mother who protects and oversees Dilla’s estate and legacy - will have an in-depth talk on Dilla’s influence and legacy from their unique perspective, breaking down the enduring impact of his beats, technique and rhythmic inventions, and how he continues to inspire the electronic music scene as a whole creatiely day by day.
