Deconstructing the Four-to-the-Floor with Noise Diva
Speakers: Noise Diva (Artist)
Moderator: Katie Thomas (Resident Advisor)
All music has its origins. With the widely known 4-to-the-floor rhythm dominating dancefloors at festivals and larger venues, it’s important to ask: do you know where the music being played originates?
Noise Diva, an artist local to the Amsterdam club scene and beyond, is not only a performer but also a dedicated sound researcher passionate about educating dancers both on and off the dancefloor. As part of this mission, the multidisciplinary artist and creative director of the Salwa Foundation will join ADE Lab for a personal exploration of sound in the contemporary electronic music landscape. In this conversation, alongside the artist, producer, and researcher herself, we will dissect the global evolution of electronic music, focusing on how immigration has influenced and challenges the "4-to-the-floor" beat that dominates today’s dance music.
From her personal experiences as an artist with Syrian roots who understand the drumpatterns and harmonies that are part of a cultural identity to exploring the globalization of sound; the conversation will uncover how underrepresented regions have significantly contributed to the broader musical landscape, which has been both adopted and adapted by a Western-focused industry.
Through the lens of curation and cultural exchange, this discussion will highlight how a new generation of electronic music professionals—with the current not excluded—can deconstruct the Western-dominated narrative in the industry. Come curious to better understand the sounds that are being brought to the dancefloor and what the grassroots are.
