Thursday, 22 August 2024
ADE 2024 opens with five Arts & Culture Opening Concerts. We celebrate extraordinary collaborations in five different locations such as a museum and a church simultaneously, with leading figures in art forms from all fields. Eefje de Visser plays Van Gogh Museum, Nick Verstand & the Cello Octet Amsterdam take on Door Open Space, Greetje Bijma and Oceanic team up to play BIMHUIS alongside LUXE, Metropole Orkest & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson play a striking tribute to J Dilla at Melkweg, and to top it off, 24classics presents Philip Glass by Lavinia Meijer & Nikki Hock. Read more about all opening concerts below.

Timelines collide

Van Gogh Museum x Eefje de Visser (unplugged)

Classic meets modern: the Van Gogh Museum welcomes someone who's a dear friend to play the museum's glass atrium. Eefje de Visser returns to the museum after ten years when she played songs from her album 'Het Is.' On ADE Wednesday, she will sing within the glass-walled part of the Van Gogh Museum. This performance is an ADE-exclusive and one-time-only experience. Eefje de Visser will strip down her performance as an ode to the space. She will play without her regular band or electronic instruments and will instead be accompanied by guitar, piano, and vocalists. This results in a fifty-minute selection of songs in their truest form.

Before and after her performance, you'll also be able to visit the recently debuted exhibition 'Vive l'impresssionnisme' with your ticket.

COCON II

COCON II is an audiovisual live performance by Cello Octet Amsterdam and Nick Verstand. The scenography consists of eight robotic arms embracing the musicians on stage, slowly unfolding along with the music. The cocoon symbolises Mother Earth's embrace as a source for humanity, but at the same time represents our human addition and destruction of that same source. This contrast is enhanced by the classical cellos as opposed to the futuristic robotics that behave as an autonomous entity on stage and interact with the musicians to create a tension arc of light, sound and kinetics.

Cocon II is the second iteration of the project, specifically designed for ADE. Utilizing Door Open Space’s massive warehouse as a canvas to position cellists, kinetics, light, sound and audience in circular layers, focusing on ritualistic, trance-inducing movements in light and sound. COCON II will feature music by Naqvi, Kara-Lis Coverdale, Jesse Broekman, Abul Mogard & KMRU, and Caterina Barbieri, played by Cello Octet Amsterdam.

A tribute to the old and the new

Greetje Bijma X Oceanic + LUXE (live)

Bimhuis presents a special collaboration between legendary free jazz singer Greetje Bijma and left-field artist Oceanic. The event will close with a genre-fusing concert by classically trained producer LUXE (live).

Greetje Bijma X Oceanic

It’s an extraordinary collaboration: the meeting of leftfield techno DJ and producer Oceanic with jazz vocal artist Greetje Bijma; a sparkling hybrid at the intersection of improvisation and electronics. Although they come from entirely different generations, they instantly found a musical connection. Expect mind-expanding vocals, danceable rhythms, and breathtaking beats.

LUXE (live)
Prepare for an electrifying night as LUXE graces the stage with her signature blend of classical finesse and cutting-edge electronic music. LUXE seamlessly merges genres, bringing an invigorating energy to every performance. Her classical training in flute, piano, and voice infuses her productions with deep musicality, resulting in rich, layered tracks that defy typical club music conventions.

As announced before, for the eighth year in a row, the world-renowned Metropole Orkest provides one of the official opening concerts of ADE, and 24classics takes over Zuiderkerk.

50 Years of J Dilla

This year, in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, they present a special tribute to J Dilla, one of the most admired and influential hip-hop producers of the 2000s. He left a strong mark on contemporary electronic music with his inventive beats.

The versatile Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has contributed to more than 600 albums, films and TV shows, collaborating with a wide range of artists. Among them are such names as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Thundercat, and many others. Dilla's work inspired Miguel and producer Carlos Nino to create 'Suite For Ma Dukes'. What began as a 4-track EP in 2009 grew into a series of live shows, and where the music was performed by an ensemble with varying lineups.

24classics presents: Philip Glass by Lavinia Meijer & Nikki Hock

Lavinia Meijer takes on Philip Glass' hypnotic, minimal, and classical music this ADE with a one-off Arts & Culture special at Zuiderkerk. Meijer brings Glass' repertoire's intense and dream-like sounds to life in her signature way during two performances. Multidisciplinary artist Nikki Hock accompanies the harpist with his audiovisual work, making us move between reality and the metaphysical. Like Hock's sculpting, event host 24classics bridges gaps between artistic dimensions and musical genres. Join one of two showcases by clicking the event link.

Tickets for all opening concerts are online now and are available through the event pages linked in the titles. Curious to find all that ADE Arts & Culture has to offer? Explore the entire programme so far via the link below.
