Night

Night culture doesn't stop at clubbing

What is an Institute for NightCulture? - ADE Thursday

The Institute for Night Culture (INC) is on its way: a new type of cultural institution in Amsterdam, solely focused on night culture, and a unique case in the world. The launch of the institute is organised in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum for modern and contemporary arts and culture and known for identifying emerging artists and new initiatives. INC’s mission is to present, produce, and document progressive night culture. Drop by the launch and symposium to learn all about the foundation of the institute and what they stand for. Anyone with a taste for free spirit, contemporary art and club culture is very welcome to join and share their thoughts.

The lineup consists of Charl Landvreugd (Stedelijk Museum), Touria Meliani (alderman of the city of Amsterdam), Catharine Rossi, and many more. If you visit this ADE Arts & Culture event, you'll also be able to access the exhibition 'Unravel - The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art'.

Occo Codex ‘24 Live - ADE Thursday and Friday

Museum Our Lord in the Attic is a seventeenth-century hidden church in the middle of the Amsterdam Red Light District. The museum invited DJ, producer, and local icon JP Enfant to compose a contemporary interpretation of the sixteenth-century choir book 'The Occo Codex' especially for ADE. He will perform this interpretation live in the hidden church with organ player Pietro Paganini on ADE Thursday and ADE Friday.

Exhibitions at SEXYLAND World

Leave it up to SEXYLAND World to host one of the most versatile programs of the week. Situated on the waterside in the North of Amsterdam, the creative space and club debuts two exhibitions that will be ongoing during ADE 2024.

The Grime Museum

'The Grime Museum' opens its doors at SEXYLAND World on ADE Thursday, offering an immersive journey into the roots and cultural impact of grime through a four-day exhibition. The project is a collaborative effort by Da Metal Messiah, What’s Culture, Ryan Hawaii, Travspresents, and Lengbaby, and dives into the origins, history, and cultural significance of the music genre. The museum aims to shine light on the stories of grime, showcasing its powerful narratives and critical social issues. Drop by for a unique opportunity to explore the genre’s rich history through artefacts, photographs, and engaging audiovisual displays.

BOUJLOUD BEATS

Boujloud is an annual colourful celebration in southern Morocco. Young people create dazzling outfits, wear traditional jewellery, and paint their faces for the gods. Through costuming the festivities provide a platform and celebrate communities that struggle to find their place elsewhere. Experience this at SEXYLAND World as 'BOUJLOUD BEATS' transforms the art gallery into a vibrant celebration of identity and tradition, blending ancient rituals with contemporary artistic expression.

The Boujloud exhibition builds on the themes of how art can occupy a space where supposedly conflicting identities can come together fluidly and takes place in the No Limits! Art Castle, the first art space in the Netherlands that stands for a world of art without boundaries, within SEXYLAND. No boundaries between so-called 'outsider' artists and the rest of the art world, no boundaries between art and design, day and night culture, or fantasy and reality. Here, you can admire and purchase art. And, as the name suggests, it is also a castle.

ADE Arts & Culture events that let you experience music in other ways than just through your ears

Sub_Bar - ADE Friday

Music is more than sound and melody as vibration plays a vital role, adding an extra dimension to the song or soundscape. Sub_Bar presents a program featuring performances that use only sub-frequencies, where music is felt through the body rather than heard through the ears, performed by both deaf and hearing artists. The program consists of a showcase of nine works by artists who are part of Channel 1, the sub-frequency music catalogue by Sub_Bar, followed by live performances by Atelier Francesco and deaf artist Calvin Kahn. Keen to try it out yourself? Explore the synthesisers and haptic technology on display in the foyer.

Vincent Moon’s Live Cinema - ADE Saturday

For nearly two decades, French filmmaker and sound artist Vincent Moon has travelled the globe, capturing the ceremonies, rituals, and cultures of local communities. This rich collection forms the foundation of his work, which he will present on ADE Saturday. Lie down on a beanbag as Moon takes you on a visual cinematographic trip and weaves the film and sound recordings from his archive into an enchanting tapestry of sound and vision.

A Taste of Ballroom: Ethereal Nights - ADE Saturday

A Taste of Ballroom returns to ADE this year with a very special twist! Yamuna Forzani is teaming up with The Dutch Ballroom Scene and Vain Beauty to bring you a versatile program filled with creativity, community, and fierce competition. Get your drag on and learn how to create a stunning drag look during the drag make-up workshop, or sit back and enjoy the theatrical dance performance, 'Ethereal Nights'. Round up your day with prizes (hopefully), as you compete in the categories 'Best Dress', 'Drag Face', and 'Shake That Ass' during the Mini Ball at the end of the day.
