With the sheer oversaturation of DJs and producers today, it’s rare to see a new artist who is something unique. Shay De Castro isn’t just a breath of fresh air, but rather one of those gusts of wind that knocks you off your feet. Once she steps up to the booth, be prepared for an unexpected journey ranging from hard-hitting techno to trance-like melodies. The young producer and DJ grew up in the United States, living in some of the best cities for techno music. Playing the guitar and listening to grunge rock since she was a child had a huge influence on her sound today, always making sure to have that enigmatic ingredient thrown into the mix. However, it was during her time in the culture-rich Los Angeles, California and Guadalajara, Mexico that took her productions to the next level, mixing her booming, driving aesthetic with deep, ominous melodies. Perhaps it was the mariachi, or maybe the tequila. Whatever it is, it seems to be working. Over the past couple of years, her prowess in the studio has landed her on some of the top 50 techno labels in the world, such as: Funk’n Deep Black, Prospect Records, Misfit Music, Night Light Records, Frequenza and Renesanz. A true lover of people’s minds, she enjoys listening to others’ views on music and life. This led to the start of her own podcast, Crimethink, where her guests have been among the world’s top artists along with those more underground. The rapidly rising artist has had the opportunity to share her talent at some of the top venues around the globe (from a longer list): Club Vertigo/Costa Rica, Le Salon Daome/Montreal, Santo Perdido/Guatemala, Warehouse 31/Los Angeles, KIN KIN, and The Hard Rock Hotel/Guadalajara. Her productions and ability to move a crowd have also given her the opportunity to share stages with Deborah De Luca, Spektre, Skober, Groovebox, and Durtysoxxx, among others. As a performer, she’ll take you on a journey you didn’t even know you wanted to go on. Swelling melodies contrast deep kicks, creating a soundscape made to transport you into a different dimension. No set is ever the same, but each is comprised of mostly unreleased tracks, merged with older, more obscure selections to cook up a unique experience each time she performs. No matter where you hear her, it’s Shay’s duty to create a place where everyone can be themselves and for her music to be an equalizer for all kinds of club-goers.
