Dave Coenen (NL)
Dave Coenen grew up in the nineties and zeroes, where R&B, neo soul and glossy pop paved the way for a tireless quest to find out the stories behind the music, the coincidences that lead to crucial moments in music, or the peculiarities that shaped the sound of a subculture. Raised by MTV and digital predecessors of YouTube, a need for interpersonal connection through art grew rapidly within Dave. Making mixtapes on primary school and crafting their own dj set with their father laid the base for their mission to find as many groovy, bass-heavy and jazzy gems in record store bins subsequently.
The need to find out everything behind and around fascinating artists and why and how they made their arts, led the path for Dave to delve into music journalism from the age of 19. An internship at Dutch music magazine OOR led to a solid freelance career of nearly 10 years in asking, researching, writing bios and articles (for Dekmantel, EKKO, TivoliVredenburg, Paradiso, Le Guess Who?, Valkhof Festival and Grasnapolsky), storing seemingly useless trivia in long term memory and conversating about the sonic arts.
Being a club booker and programme maker as well, Dave wants to make a difference with a more soulful, more inclusive and more fluid sound in Dutch night clubs. As a dj, boundaries in between the sensual, the funky and the rowdy are near-to non-existent; a vision that brought their dj moniker Razzmic to gigs at Lowlands, Wildeburg, Milkshake, WAS. and Doka.
